Planning The Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Region's Transit

Established in 1974, the Roanoke Valley Transportation Planning Organization (RVTPO) is integral to planning and budgeting federal transportation funds in the Roanoke region. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Transportation, RVTPO is responsible for transportation planning within the urbanized areas of Roanoke and surrounding counties, focusing on areas anticipated to urbanize in the next 20 years. RVTPO also gained significance as a Transportation Management Area post-2010 Census. Funded primarily through federal transportation funds, matched by local contributions, RVTPO’s staffing and administration are managed by the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission.
