Roanoke River Greenway
Welcome to the Roanoke River Greenway!
The greenway begins in Wasena
Park, near the intersection of Winchester Ave SW and 12th St SW. The
Greenway continues for 5.5 flat miles along the Roanoke River through Wasena,
Smith and Piedmont Parks before ending at Bennington St SE near the Sewage
Treatment Plant. At mile 1.6, the Greenway becomes a wide sidewalk before
passing under the Norfolk and Southern Railway bridge in front of Carilion
Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Following the sidewalk, turn left onto Hamilton
Terrace, then immediately left onto Piedmont St. Here you will find the
Greenway once again separate from roads or sidewalks. Some of the pictures
show the Greenway during construction in September 2007.
In the table below, landmarks
are pictured with mileage and calories burned by bicycling, walking and running.
The caloric values are based on 118 calories per mile running, 100 calories per
mile walking, and 40 calories per mile bicycling. References for the calories burned for
each activity can be found below the table. Please enjoy the greenway, be
safe, and carry out all trash.
