Project
Background
The
Rural Bikeway Plan (2006) is an update to the Rural
Bikeway Plan for the Fifth Planning District Commission, completed
in 1997. This update is part of the Roanoke Valley – Alleghany Regional
Commission’s FY 2006 Rural Transportation Planning Program. The
Rural Bikeway Plan is expected to be completed in June 2006.
Project
Purpose
The
purpose of the Rural Bikeway Plan is to provide information and guidance
on the planning and provision of bicycle accommodations (facilities),
at the local and regional levels, that enhance and encourage bicycling
in the rural portions of the Regional Commission’s service area,
thereby better enabling citizens to enjoy the transportation, health,
and economic benefits of a bicycle-friendly environment.
This plan also breifly
considers the relationship between bicycling and tourism and the potential
economic benefits of a bicycle-friendly environment and outdoor recreational
resources.
Plan
Development and Methodology
The
Rural Bikeway Plan builds on and incorporates information and methodologies
from recent bicycle-related planning efforts. The Rural Bikeway Plan
and associated work products should be used in concert with local, regional,
state, and national plans and policies.
