May is National Bike Month
May is Bike Month in the Roanoke and New River Valleys, and local organizations have teamed up to host a series of events celebrating bicycles, bicycle culture, and bicycle people. Events include the Mayor's Bike Ride, Regional Bike Award presentations, Roanoke Open Streets, and other events. Click here for a for a calendar of Bike Month 2012 events.

"Bridge the Gap" - Roanoke River Greenway Fundraising Campaign
The official launch of the Bridge the Gap capital fundraising campaign is scheduled for Tuesday May 15, 2012 at 11:45 am (immediately following the ribbon cutting for the Roanoke River Greenway section between Memorial Avenue and Bridge St.). The goal of the Bridge the Gap campaign is to raise the $7 million needed to complete the remaining 4 mile section of the Roanoke River Greenway between the City of Roanoke (Bridge St) and the City of Salem (Rotary Park/419). Professional Development Webinarseries 2012

The Regional Commission will host the following APBP webinars in 2012. All webinars will be held at the Regional Commission (upstairs conference room) from 3:00 -4:00 pm. Webinars are open to all interested parties and individuals and are offered free of charge. Space is limited to approximately 25 participants. Carvins Cove Land Use Passes Now Available for Purchase at Bennett Springs and Timberview Parking Areas
Cyclists, hikers, and equestrians can now purchase required Carvins Cove land use passes at the Bennet Springs and Timberview parking lots. The Western Virginia Water Authority and City of Roanoke Park and Recreation have installed payment drop boxes at these parking areas allowing visitors to purchase a daily pass ($2 per day) or yearly pass ($20 per year - checks only). Passes will continue to be sold at the Carvins Cove Boat Landing Security Office on Reservoir Road.

The Roanoke Bike Summit, held on Monday February 27-Tuesday February 28, 2012 at the Roanoke Higher Education Center provided information on League of American Bicyclists "Bicycle Friendly America" programs of guidance and professional assistance in becoming bicycle friendly. Roanoke Valley Greenways Interactive Map Receives NADO Awards
The Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission's Roanoke Valley Greenways Interactive Map received was awarded a 2011 Excellence in Regional Transportation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO). The Interactive Greenway Map also received a 2011 Trailblazer Award which are awarded to projects that show significant evidence of unique innovation, as selected by peer judges, from all Innovation Award and Excellence in Regional Transportation Award winners.

State Bicycle Policy Plan Adopted
In September 2011, the Virginia Department of Transportation adopted the State Bicycle Policy Plan. The Plan was developed to ensure bicyclists are an integral component of Virginia’s multimodal transportation system, and to provide bicycle policy recommendations that will guide the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of bicycle accommodations.
